MY FITNESS
JOURNEY
Hi!
Welcome to Charlotte Welton Fitness Coach. My own fitness journey has been a long windy road full of bumps and detours.
Rolling back to my school years I ran 800m and cross-country at inter-school level. Like many teenage girls my interest dropped off and I didn’t do much sport or intentional exercise until my early 30’s. The catalyst to ‘get fit’ was when I became a mum to my two daughters. Like many women I started out running because it was the most accessible exercise I could do that fit around my young family and my 9-5 office job. I also thought it would be the ‘best’ way to ‘get rid of the baby weight’. I got the bug and completed a few Great North Run’s but didn’t do any other form of training.

I then found some Les Mills group classes which I loved – Body Pump was my favourite! At this point I’d had enough of my office job so in 2012 I took the plunge and retrained as a Fitness Instructor and took a job at a privately owned gym in Darlington. I taught group exercise classes (HIIT, circuits, boxercise, legs & core etc.) and ran the membership gym. During this time, I also started strength training with Ste Gordon who continues to be my coach today. In 2018 the gym closed so I reluctantly set up my own fitness coaching business. I had no idea if I could make it work but it turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made!

I’ve become passionate about strength training - my motto is ‘Live long and strong’! Every day I see the many benefits it gives both me and my clients. I am of the firm belief that anyone of any age can do some form of strength training and it’s never too late to start!

Speaking of starting late, at the ripe old age of 44 I decided to try my hand at Kettlebell Sport. It’s a tough mix of strength, endurance and cardio. Technique and the right mindset are key to success and I’m constantly trying to improve on both. Over the past 6 years I’ve competed in many events in the UK and at an international level as part of the England team. It’s a really inclusive sport and even at age 50, I feel like there’s a lot more I can go on to achieve.

Over the past 6 years my coaching practice has evolved, and I’ve found myself focussing more on coaching women and people who menstruate - in particular those who are about to enter or are in the menopause transition. Even though it’s an inevitable part of life that affects over 50% of the population, it’s only within the past few years that menopause has received the attention it needs. Exercise, movement and nutrition can play a pivotal role in improving the symptoms of menopause, so this feels like a natural fit for my coaching focus.

I coach people in person either on a one-to-one basis or in a group session and also online on a one-to-one basis. Please see the ‘How to work with me’ section for details of how you can work with me.
